So many goodies .. but unavail on my servers which run Python 2.4.3 stock :( 

was particularly interested in using 
defaultdict dict subclass that calls a factory function to supply missing values

New in version 2.5.

    Can you build a newer Python in your home directory and update your environment to use that instead?

    Thanks! Yeah sorry left out details but in the pursuit of simplicity in administration, for one project, I am actually sharing one user id with others. While I believe most are perl folks but I don't wish to break anything.

    Though I suppose I cld use a different bash profile when i log in
    hmmm
